West Chester Public Library understands the crucial importance of helping to educate our community. That’s why we initially launched the Literacy Heroes Breakfast in 2004. Now, seven years later, we continue to be reminded that it is not only teachers or educators who spend their valuable time teaching others how to read and write. Along with professionals, it is often a community volunteer, a grandmother, a parent or another individual who spends valuable time helping others. We want to honor these unsung heroes…individuals giving selflessly of their time and talent to help champion the cause of literacy.
- Do you have a neighbor who is helping children learn to read?
- Is your child participating in a community outreach project to support literacy?
- Do you know of a company that provides scholarship funding to encourage reading programs for adults and senior citizens? Perhaps toddlers or school-aged children are the lucky recipients of such programmatic funding?
- Have you read a newspaper article chronicling a local resident who has used the internet and/or other innovative technology practices to promote literacy?
