Eiight different categories have been established to recognize literacy heroes in the Greater West Chester area. Members of the community are encouraged to submit nominations in support of friends, neighbors, colleagues and peers. Nominations will be collected between November 15, 2007 and January 15, 2008. Review panels comprised of corporate sponsors will then have the difficult task of selecting just one recipient per category to be recognized at the Heroes Breakfast on April 18, 2008.

Adult Literacy Hero
This category recognizes individuals associated with a literacy-based action of extraordinary kindness, courage, or outreach – people who have either transformed another's life or have been receptive to having their own life changed through the power of books, reading and literacy. (Nominees in this category must be 21 years of age or older.)

Community Impact Hero
This category recognizes an individual, community group, neighborhood organization, or local company that consistently demonstrates a commitment to the community through literacy-based initiatives. This award could recognize the development of a program or service that offers a substantial impact to the community.

Corporate Good Neighbor Hero
This category recognizes a local business or corporation that has worked diligently to promote literacy in the West Chester area. Applicable nominees may have partnered with a nonprofit, introduced a new literacy-based initiative within their corporation, or made a financial contribution to further the cause of literacy and benefit the community-at-large.

Educational Hero
This category recognizes educational institutions and/or the individuals within those organizations (educators, administrators, parents, professors, or students) who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in education by promoting literacy and reading-based initiatives. Individuals could be nominated for their dedication to academic excellence or for such acts as creating innovative educational programs or motivating groups to support the cause of literacy.

Local Author Hero
This category recognizes a local author of any age who resides within Chester County and has penned and published a book. Preferably, nominees should be individuals who are passionate about the cause of literacy, and whose works are representative of their desire to promote learning and knowledge through the power of a good book.

Medical/Health Literacy Hero
This category recognizes either an individual or a company that has explored a linkage between health and literacy. Any doctor, nurse, public health organization, health care provider, medical institution, adult education program or public health department that is committed to championing the cause of literacy qualifies. Additionally, individuals who work within these organizations would also qualify for a Medical/Health Literacy Hero Award.

Technology/Innovation Hero
This award will recognize an individual or organization that has used either technology and/or innovation to create a literacy-based program or initiative. Examples include web-based learning or informational tools, or the engineering and invention of any device or machine that can aid literacy initiatives, including a struggling reader’s desire to read. Nominees can be any age to qualify for this category.

Youth Literacy Hero
This category recognizes a literacy-based action of extraordinary kindness, courage, or unselfishness. This individual may have changed another's life, or had their own life transformed, through the power of books, reading and literacy. (Nominees must be school-aged.)
