For an informative tour of Chester County, or for an explanation of “who’s who” on a historical marker, Bruce Mowday’s work provides a wealth of information.

Understanding the importance of the Brandywine Region’s historical legacy, Bruce has written seven books that preserve stories and images from its past. They’re well-researched, educational, and reflect his 20-plus years’ experience as a journalist. Historical postcards, maps, documents, and photographs enhance the narratives and enliven the history they record.

  • September 11, 1777: Washington's Defeat at Brandywine Dooms Philadelphia, gives Chester County residents vivid insights into this momentous battle and its significant role in the American Revolution.
  • With the aid of West Chester: Six Walking Tours, readers can stroll through the borough of West Chester and learn about the architecture and history of more than a hundred historic buildings and properties.
  • West Chester tells the history of the county seat through vintage postcards.
  • Bruce’s other books about the area include Downingtown, Coatesville, The Republican Committee of Chester County (written with Craig Lincoln Tucker) and Along the Brandywine River. Unlikely Allies goes a bit farther south, telling the story of the Civil War POW camp at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island.

Bruce also presents lectures about local history for audiences at libraries, historical societies and civic organizations. In 2007, as a guest lecturer for the Chester County Library System’s “Chester County Reads” campaign, he gave talks on the connection between the Battle of Brandywine and the British troops’ subsequent occupation of Philadelphia at several libraries. His presentations helped the library system accomplish its 2007 goal of promoting Chester County history through reading and community activities.

For his contributions to the Chester County community, Bruce Mowday has been selected as the West Chester Public Library’s 2008 Local Author Hero.
