West Chester Public Library is asking the community to help identify uniformed service personnel from within Chester County who should be considered “Literacy Heroes.”

Qualified nominees could include any man or woman who currently serves in the armed forces or reserves, as well as local police officers, fire fighters, and other uniformed service personnel who are committed to the cause of literacy.
In preparation for the Fifth Annual Literacy Heroes Breakfast (www.literacyheroes.com), an annual event that recognizes ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things to promote the cause of literacy, the event planning committee added a new category this year – The Uniformed Service Category.

Board President Howard Sundwall stated, “It is an honor to live in such a tight-knit community where residents pull together to champion the cause of literacy. In planning our next event, WCPL wanted to open up our nominations to a critical group very committed to the cause of literacy – uniformed service personnel. We look forward to reading some amazing stories and giving credit these valuable literacy heroes.”

Examples of a Uniformed Service Hero could include a soldier teaching another soldier to read and/or write, a local police officer visiting local schools to teach students about safely; a firefighter providing instruction on fire safety to local families, etc. This category could also recognize any individual or corporation within the general community who coordinates literacy-outreach activities to uniformed officers. Examples could include book shipments to soldiers, tutoring information, virtual literacy support groups, etc.
Details on this category, as well as an online nomination form, can be found online at www.literacyheroes.com.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, January 25, 2010.

There is no fee to nominate a uniformed officer. Nominations will be reviewed by corporate sponsors, and award recipients will be recognized during a celebratory breakfast at Longwood Gardens in April.

The Literacy Heroes Breakfast is presented by West Chester Public Library and Verizon.
