For the fifth consecutive year, West Chester Public Library and Verizon partnered with more than a dozen other prestigious corporate sponsors to host the Fifth Annual Literacy Heroes Breakfast. Once again, dozens of compelling stories were submitted in response to a community-wide Call for Nominations that aimed to recognize literacy heroes throughout Chester County. Event sponsors had the difficult task of reviewing nominations and selecting just one winner in each of the eight hero categories.

Names of the 2010 winners were announced during the motivational awards breakfast at Longwood Gardens on Friday, April 16. Award winners included:
  • Adult Literacy Hero – Carol Klauss
  • Community Impact Hero– Nelly Arévalo-Jiménez
  • Corporate Good Neighbor Hero – Chatham Financial Corporation
  • Education Hero – Wilma Santos
  • Local Author Hero – Bruce Larkin
  • Technology/Innovation Hero – Karen Truncellito
  • Uniformed Service Hero – Lockheed Martin Corporation
  • Youth Literacy Heroes – Bailey Morganstein
Complete bios and photos for each winner can be found in this special section, as well as online at here.

WCPL Board President Howard Sundwall stated, “When West Chester Public Library began this tradition in 2006, we had no idea the stories we would uncover, or the inspirational people we would find. We are honored to continue this community tradition of recognizing and celebrating excellence all around us.”

The breakfast, which was held in the beautiful ballroom at Longwood Gardens, filled the venue to capacity once again as a standing-room-only audience of 230 guests gathered. Guests were inspired not only by the stories of the literacy heroes themselves, but also by comments shared by the event’s emcee, Adam Joseph of 6abc Action News.

Gale Given, President of Verizon – PA, commented, “In the hectic pace of today's world, it is exciting to begin the day surrounded by many remarkable people -- our honorees -- our literacy champions! We applaud their leadership, dedication and passion to help unlock the promise of literacy for others in need in the community.“

WCPL offers a variety of free programs and services to the community and is located at 415 N. Church Street in West Chester. To learn more about the library, log onto www.wcpubliclibrary.org
